Your Cupe Local 5170 Executive Committee

Committees

Primary CUPE 5170 Committees

  • Negotiating Committee

The function of the Committee is to prepare collective bargaining proposals and to negotiate a collective agreement with the employer.

  • Trustee Committee

The three trustee positions are elected at the biennial elections. Their position is to audit the books and accounts of the Local, and to report their findings, recommendations, and/or concerns to the membership.

Standing CUPE 5170 Committees

  • Grievance Committee

The Committee deals with and decides on grievances not settled in the initial stage.

  • Good of the Union

The membership can nominate anyone they believe is in need of assistance through the benevolent fund. This is eligible to any CUPE 5170 members who are in hospital or confined to their home due to illness for periods of two weeks or greater or are celebrating the birth/adoption of a child. The Union also extends the Local's condolences to the family of a deceased Local member and to a member upon the death of an immediate family member.

  • Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee

The Committee investigates perceived and proven violations of the OHSA

  • Joint Labor Management Committees

The purpose of this Committee is to meet and confer on matters of mutual interest which are not properly the subject matter of a grievance or negotiations. Terms of reference shall include such things as safety and working conditions, local rules and regulations, pay periods, Benefit Plans and Workers' Compensation.

  • Bylaws Committee

The Committee is responsible for maintaining the governing rules, ensuring they are current, functional, and compliant with legal standards.

Equality statement

Union solidarity is based on the principle that union members are equal and deserve mutual respect at all levels. Any behaviour that creates conflict prevents us from working together to strengthen our union.

As unionists, mutual respect, cooperation and understanding are our goals. We should neither condone nor tolerate behaviour that undermines the dignity or self-esteem of any individual or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment.

Discriminatory speech or conduct which is racist, sexist, transphobic or homophobic hurts and thereby divides us. So too, does discrimination on the basis of ability, age, class, religion, language and ethnic origin.

Sometimes discrimination takes the form of harassment. Harassment means using real or perceived power to abuse, devalue or humiliate. Harassment should not be treated as a joke. The uneasiness and resentment that it creates are not feelings that help us grow as a union.

Discrimination and harassment focus on characteristics that make us different; and they reduce our capacity to work together on shared concerns such as decent wages, safe working conditions, and justice in the workplace, society and in our union.

CUPE’s policies and practices must reflect our commitment to equality. Members, staff and elected officers must be mindful that all persons deserve dignity, equality and respect.
